As the Chicago daughter of Mississippi folk, I walk into the 21st century carrying a mojo that won't leave me alone. As a practitioner of the Blues, as a RootWoman/Healer, as a teacher, I embody the sounds of my ancestors. As poet, I create texts of liberatory dimension. As scholar, I work to build a framework that supports Black ownership of and authority over our aesthetic heritage. As George Clinton put it: "with the rhythm it takes to dance to what we have to live through, you can dance under water and not get wet"!
